On Friday, October 26th, an incident occurred during the Rockets’ home game against the Metcalfe Jets. During his first shift, Hugo Lusignan, one of the North Dundas players, was accidently cut by a skate blade directly across the bottom side of the wrist. The cut was so severe that he player immediately dropped his gloves and headed for the dressing room.
Aron Sherrer, father of Tyson – a player recently traded to Metcalfe by the Rockets - went to Hugo’s immediate aid in the dressing room, without hesitation. Once in the room, several of the Rockets’ staff were attempting to control the bleeding. That’s when the trainer of the visiting team understood the severity of the situation and ran across the rink and through the lobby to help. Although not a life threatening injury, with the cut that severe, the prospect was very real at the time. Once he entered the room, the trainer began to provide assistance and take control of the situation.
That trainer’s name is Nathan Bols. He is a paramedic and the Jets’ current trainer. Nathan is also the former captain of the Metcalfe Jets/Embrun Panthers, who spent his whole junior career in our league (2012-2018).
It is so important to have qualified people helping in our league, and parents like Mr. Sherrer who put the well-being of others before any hockey rivalries or other personal feelings. Had it not been for him, the Rockets might not have recognized the severity of the injury as quickly as they have, and had it not been for the trained reaction and awareness of Nathan, a bad situation could have become much worse.
The NCJHL would like to thank these two individuals in particular and all of our volunteers in general for coming out to help every time!
